The state of Hawaii legalized medical marijuana in the year 2000, via the Hawaii Medical Marijuana Act. Under this Act, qualifying patients have the right to possess up to 4 ounces of medical marijuana and may grow (cultivate) up to seven marijuana plants at their grow site without penalty from the state. All qualifying patients must register with the Department of Health and be evaluated and recommended by either a nurse practitioner or physician.
